This guide covers which terminal each zone lands on, how N.C. and N.O. devices go on the loop, where the 2k EOL resistor goes, and the two VISTA-20P options for more out of each pair: double-balanced zones and zone doubling. (K5305-1QGV3, pp. 1-2)
For how supervised loops work across brands, see EOL resistor values by panel.

Steps
- Pick the zone terminals Hardwired zones land on terminals 8 through 20. Zone 1 has its own pair, Z1+ on 8 and Z1− on 9. Zones 2 to 8 each have a HI terminal and share GND returns: 10, 13, 16 and 19. Zones 7 and 8 (terminals 18-20) exist on the VISTA-20P only; the VISTA-15P has six hardwired zones. (K5305-1QGV3, pp. 1, 2)
- Run N.C. devices in series on the HI side Closed-circuit devices go in series in the HI (+) leg of the loop. On an EOL zone the 2k resistor goes in series after the last device, out at the far end, not on the panel terminals. Keep each loop on zones 1-8 under 300 ohms of wire resistance, not counting the EOL. (K5305-1QGV3, p. 2; K5305-1V8, pp. 2-6, 5-1)
- Run N.O. devices in parallel across the loop Open-circuit devices connect across the two loop wires. On an EOL zone the 2k resistor goes across the loop wires at the last device. (K5305-1QGV3, p. 2)
- Use EOL zones on UL commercial burglary jobs For UL commercial burglary installations, Honeywell calls for EOL zones. Leaving the resistor anywhere but the end of the loop means the zone isn't properly supervised and may not report an open. (K5305-1QGV3, p. 2)
- Put 2-wire smokes on zone 1 Zone 1 (terminals 8 and 9) takes 2-wire smoke detectors, up to 16 of them (10 if the ESL "clean me" option is on), with a 2000-ohm EOL across the loop at the last detector. Watch polarity, Z1+ on 8 and Z1− on 9. Zone 1 only carries alarm current for one detector in alarm, and 4-wire smokes never go on zone 1. (K5305-1QGV3, p. 2; K5305-1V8, pp. 2-6, 2-7)
- Wire 4-wire smokes with a power supervision relay Power 4-wire smoke or combustion detectors from the aux output, + on terminal 5 and − on 4, switched through a relay programmed as zone type 54 (fire zone reset), or through trigger output 17 set "Out Norm Low" = Yes in 79 and zone type 54 in *80 (100 mA max). Put an EOLR-1 power supervision relay at the end, with its N.O. contact (closed while powered) in series with the 2000-ohm EOL on the zone loop. Land the loop on any of zones 2 to 8; heat detectors go on those terminals too. *(K5305-1QGV3, p. 2)
- Add double-balanced burglary zones if you want tamper (VISTA-20P) On the VISTA-20P a zone can be double-balanced: a 2k across each contact plus a 2k at the end of the loop. It gives zone tamper, and a short across the EOL reads as tamper. Use it on burglary zones only. (K5305-1QGV3, p. 2)
- Double up zones with 3k and 6.2k (VISTA-20P) Zone doubling puts two N.C. zones on one hardwired zone: the base zone takes a 3k resistor and its partner a 6.2k. The pairs are 2/10, 3/11, 4/12, 5/13, 6/14, 7/15 and 8/16. A short across either EOL reads as tamper. The partner zone numbers can't be used for anything else, and doubling doesn't raise the total zone count. Resistors aren't supplied. (K5305-1QGV3, p. 2)
- Keep fire zones single EOL Don't use double-balanced zones or zone doubling on fire zones. Fire zones stay on the plain 2k EOL loop or the 2-wire smoke circuit on zone 1. (K5305-1QGV3, p. 2)
- Get into programming From an alpha keypad, key the installer code then 8-0-0. The factory installer code is 4112. If the panel was last closed out with 98, that code won't get you in: power the panel down, power it back up, and press [] and [#] together within 50 seconds. Change the installer code in field 20 before you leave. *(K5305-1QGV3, p. 1; K5305-1PRV9, pp. 4, 5)
- Program each zone in 56 Press *56, answer the confirm prompt, then enter the zone number (01-08 hardwired on the VISTA-20P, 01-06 on the VISTA-15P). Work through the prompts: zone type (two digits, from the table below), partition (1, 2, or 3 for common; VISTA-20P only), and report code (two digits entered as pairs, so a report code of 10 is keyed 01 then 00; any non-zero first digit turns on Contact ID reporting for the zone). *(K5305-1PRV9, pp. 20, 21)
- Set the hardwire type and response time For zones 02-08 the hardwire type prompt sets the loop: 0 EOL, 1 N.C., 2 N.O., 3 zone doubling, 4 double-balanced (3 and 4 are VISTA-20P only). Zone 1 is fixed as an EOL zone. Then pick the response time for zones 01-08: 0 = 10 ms, 1 = 350 ms, 2 = 700 ms, 3 = 1.2 s (on zone 1, option 3 is the smoke "clean me" setting). With zone doubling, the partner zone takes the same response time as its base zone. The input type shows as HW for built-in zones and can't be changed. (K5305-1PRV9, p. 21; K5305-1V8, pp. 2-6, 2-7)
- Wire 4219/4229 expander zones Land the 4219 or 4229 on the keypad (ECP) terminals and set its DIP address: 07 for zones 09-16, 08 for 17-24, then 09, 10 and 11 for 25-32, 33-40 and 41-48 (09-11 are VISTA-20P only; the VISTA-15P takes two modules). With DIP switch 7 off (EOL mode, required for UL), every used expander loop ends in a 2k EOL, the same value as the panel zones, with up to 300 ohms of loop resistance plus the EOL; switch 7 on sets all eight loops to plain N.C. with no resistor. Older 4219/4229 boards without switch 7 took a 1k EOL instead, which is the value the VISTA-15P/20P setup guide still lists. Expander zones respond in 300-500 ms; loop A on each module can be set fast, 10-15 ms. In 56, set the input type to 2 (AW). Expander zone numbers can't overlap zone-doubling partners. *(K5305-1QGV3, p. 1; K5305-1PRV9, pp. 21, 27; K5305-1V8, pp. 2-6, 2-7, 2-8; N8924V4, pp. 1, 2; N8910V3D, pp. 1, 2)
- Exit programming Press 99 to leave programming and keep installer code + 8-0-0 working for the next visit. *98 also exits but locks that path out, so getting back in takes a power cycle and []+[#]; field 88 sets how strict the *98 lockout is. *(K5305-1PRV9, pp. 4, 11)
- Walk test every zone Close all protected doors and windows and disarm. Enter the installer code + [5] (TEST), then 0 for walk test. The sounder sounds for about a second. Fault each zone in turn: the keypad beeps three times and shows the zone number, which clears on restore. Test smoke and CO detectors per their maker's instructions. With every zone intact, no zone numbers should show. Exit with the user code + [1] (OFF). (K5305-1QGV3, p. 1)
Verify
Run the walk test from step 15 and fault every zone, including each device on a series loop, not just the last one. Each fault gives three beeps and the zone number on the keypad, and it clears when the zone restores. (p. 1)
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| Zone won't report an open | The EOL isn't at the end of the loop, so the zone isn't supervised (p. 2) |
| Double-balanced or doubled zone shows tamper | Short across the EOL (p. 2) |
| Zone 10-16 acting strangely | It's the partner of a doubled zone and was also programmed for something else; doubled zone numbers can't be reused (p. 2) |
| Zones 7 or 8 dead | The panel is a VISTA-15P, which has hardwired zones 1-6 only (pp. 1, 2) |
| 2-wire smokes in trouble | Check polarity on Z1+ (8) and Z1− (9) and the 2000-ohm EOL at the last detector (p. 2) |
| 4-wire smoke loop in trouble | Detector power lost; the EOLR-1 N.O. contact only closes with power applied (p. 2) |
| Expander zone always faulted | Wrong EOL for the switch 7 setting: current 4219/4229 boards want 2k with switch 7 off, or no resistor with switch 7 on; a 1k left over from an older board won't match (N8924V4 p. 1; N8910V3D p. 1) |
| E4 or E8 on the keypad | More zones programmed than the expanders can handle; clears once programming is fixed (K5305-1PRV9, p. 4) |
| Installer code + 8-0-0 does nothing | Programming was closed with 98; power-cycle and press []+[#] within 50 seconds (K5305-1PRV9, p. 4) |
| Zone number stays on the keypad after test | A zone is still faulted; all zones must be intact for the display to clear (p. 1) |

FAQs
What EOL resistor does a VISTA-20P use?
2k on hardwired zones, installed after the last device. (K5305-1QGV3, p. 2)
Which terminals are zone 1?
Terminal 8 (Z1+) and terminal 9 (Z1−). (p. 2)
Can I put the resistor at the panel?
No. If the EOL isn't at the end of the loop, the zone isn't properly supervised and may not report an open. (p. 2)
How many 2-wire smokes fit on zone 1?
Up to 16, with a 2000-ohm EOL. (p. 2)
Which resistors does zone doubling use?
3k on the base zone and 6.2k on its partner; zones pair 2/10 through 8/16. (p. 2)
Can a fire zone be double-balanced or doubled?
No. Honeywell rules out both on fire zones. (p. 2)
What is the default installer code?
- Change it in field 20. *(K5305-1PRV9, pp. 4-5)
How do I get out of programming?
99. Use *98 only if you want to lock out installer code + 8-0-0 re-entry. *(K5305-1PRV9, p. 4)
What EOL do 4219/4229 expander zones use?
2k, the same as the panel's own zones, with DIP switch 7 off. Switch 7 on runs all eight loops as N.C. with no resistor. The 1000-ohm value in the VISTA-15P/20P setup guide is for older modules that have no switch 7. (N8924V4 pp. 1-2; N8910V3D pp. 1-2)
Does the VISTA-15P have zones 7 and 8?
No. The VISTA-15P has six hardwired zones; zones 7 and 8, double-balanced zones and zone doubling are VISTA-20P only. (pp. 1, 2)
