Facility code, card number and Wiegand

A prox or iCLASS reader sends the card as a string of Wiegand bits on D0 and D1. The facility code identifies the site batch; the card number identifies the credential inside it.

In 26-bit H10301 the 26 bits are 1 even parity bit, 8 facility code bits, 16 card number bits and 1 odd parity bit. Bit 1 makes bits 1–13 hold an even count of 1s; bit 26 makes bits 14–26 hold an odd count.

Larger formats carry more: H10306 34-bit (16 + 16), Corporate 1000 35-bit (12 + 20) and 48-bit (22 + 23) with three parity bits, H10304 37-bit (16 + 19) and H10302 37-bit (35-bit card number, no facility code).

FAQ

What is a facility code? The facility code (FC) is a site number written into every card in a batch, so a reader at one site rejects cards issued for another. In 26-bit H10301 it is 8 bits, 0–255.
What is the card number? The card number is the unique ID of each credential inside its facility code. In 26-bit H10301 it is 16 bits, 0–65,535, and it is usually printed on the card.
How does 26-bit parity work?Bit 1 is even parity over bits 2–13, and bit 26 is odd parity over bits 14–25. The panel rejects the read if either check fails.
Why does my panel want hex instead of FC and card number?Mercury-based panels, Lenel OnGuard and HID imports often store the raw Wiegand value. The raw hex here includes the parity bits, exactly as the reader sends it.
Which format is my card?Check the order code on the box or the HID ordering guide. H10301 is the common 26-bit format; Corporate 1000 formats are assigned to a single company by HID.
